Ukulapha Community Outreach project is located in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and is an international project of VIDEA, a registred non profit in Victoria since 1978. 

Ukulapha provides direct support for 1020 schoolchildren through training, sponsorships and community outreach. The project coordinator, Carolyn Burns lived in Victoria, BC for 25 years. She made the decision to return to her homeland in 2007 and develop a plan to give back to her community, She chose to affiliate with the school in the township of Slangspruit, close to her home in Pietermaritzburg.

Carolyn and volunteers have achieved so much! She has found sponsors for several of the children, assuring they will recieve solid post secondary training; she has worked with the school to develop a community garden where they will raise the much needed vegetables for the food program; she has developed and given many educational workshops on all aspects of South African issues providing much needed emotional support to famlies who are headed by children and to women facing issues of rape and abuse. Carolyn has inflused an aura of responsibility and ownership into the children at the school and has organized repair and painting campaigns, educational campaigns on sex education, tuberculosis and Aids. 

Since its founding, the project has provided much needed capital and finacial aid providing tuition assistance, lunch programs, sponsorships and in 2014 completed the construction of a desperately needed Resource Centre. The centre provided computer training, library and a safe meeting place. 

Caroly's integrity and careful monitoring of all donated funds ensure each donation is maximaized for the benefit of the children. 

Truly, Ukulapha has touched so many hearts. 

If ever there was an organization that lived their mission statement "healing through knowledge, compassion and community", it would be Ukulapha.
