Carlos Núñez LIVE
Carlos Núñez is one of the world's top bagpipers and an internationally acclaimed headliner on the Celtic/World Music scene.
Dubbed the “Jimi Hendrix of the Bagpipe”, he has attained no less than pop star status, whether in front of a folk crowd, in a symphony hall, or performing in a cathedral. Yet, few pop stars pack the energy, virtuosity, imagination, daring and charisma into their concerts and recordings as multi-instrumentalist Carlos Núñez does. As a teenager he was discovered by Irish legends The Chieftains in his native Galicia, the Celtic region in North West Spain, becoming an honorary member of the band recording the Grammy Award winning CD together, "Santiago".
SONY MUSIC (formerly BMG Classics/RCA Victor) have released his 12 albums to date, that have sold 1 million copies since his debut in 1996, accumulating several Platinum and Gold CDs and DVDs, as well as 2 Latin Grammy nominations. They feature a wide variety of artists such as The Chieftains, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, and many more.
Carlos Núñez is also classically trained on the recorder and often plays with orchestras around the world, having performed at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Musikverein in Vienna or the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Carlos has known Beethoven's Celtic songs for years, since he visited his house in Bonn. He always felt they should be brought back to their traditional roots and Savall confirmed that he felt Beethoven's tempi could be far faster. This is exactly Carlos's proposal : Celtic vocalists and dance music feel. These orchestrations were originally commissioned by the Orchestre National de Bretagne for a series of shows with Welsh Barytone Bryn Terfel.
According to the BBC, “Carlos Núñez is one of the world’s most exciting, and most serious, musicians.”
Appearing with Carlos is a 5-piece band that includes renowned percussionist Xurxo Núñez, master guitarist Francisco ‘Pancho’ Álvarez, and champion fiddler and step dancer Jon Pilatzke, and also CeltFest Vancouver Island favourites: among them, master piper René Cusson, plus the dynamic CeltFest dance troupe.
