Life Journeys We Take
Friday, April 29 7:30 PM
Saturday, April 30 7:30 PM
Sunday, May 1 2:00 PM
Many a songwriter has given us something to sing about when it comes to life’s journey. For the Peninsula Singers’ spring concert, we’ll take a musical journey that touches on the important milestones we reach in life, the roadblocks we may encounter and the joys we may be lucky enough to savour. The Beatles’ “In My Life” sums up the spring concert: “There are places I remember/all my life though some have changed/some forever not for better/some have gone and some remain.” Artistic Director Glenda Korella has chosen songs that celebrate love—the teenage version filled with angst and the view of two older companions in “Fields of Gold.” There’s much merriment, as usual with the Singers. For example, the Men of the Peninsula Singers will once again show that they are the all-time champion hams with their take on the late 50’s pop hit by the Searchers, “Love Potion Number 9”. On the other hand, the Women of the Peninsula Singers will ask mum for advice in “Ma, He’s Makin’ Eyes at Me.” And of course, how can we get through the detours and roadblocks without a friend. So, we’ll sing Carol King’s “You’ve Got A Friend.” Come with us and enjoy the ride.
We’ll have Janet Yonge as our accomplished pianist, Lynell Korella on bass, Terry Erskine on percussion and Jim Kingham back as our masterful Master of Ceremonies.
Spotlight on Young Artist
The Peninsula Singers are delighted to welcome violinist Danielle Tsao and cellist Sophie van der Sloot as our guest artists this spring. They are students at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, enrolled in the Conservatory’s Collegium Program and are two of many Conservatory students who’ve been part of our “Spotlight on Young Artists” over the past few years. This list includes Sophie’s older brother, Jacob, a violist and now a student at the prestigious Julliard School of Music. Both Sophie and Danielle are members of the Collegium program at the Conservatory, where chamber music is featured. For the past year, the two have played together, enjoying the experience. Danielle was privileged to solo with the senior orchestra at the VCM Student Showcase concert in 2015. In 2014, she began to study viola, in addition to violin. On both instruments, she has won numerous awards and scholarships at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and at the VCM, including First Place in the Performing Arts BC Junior Strings Category A in 2015. Sophie has won many awards at local festivals on her cello, and has been a regular performer in the Honours concerts as part of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival. In 2014 she was the winner of Junior Strings at the BC Provincial Music Festival. Past summers have included attending the Valhalla Summer Music School, the VCM Summer Strings program and the Young Artists Program at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In 2015 Sophie was a soloist with both the Sidney Classical Orchestra and the Victoria Symphony at Butchart Gardens.
Danielle is a grade nine student at Mount Douglas Secondary and Sophie is a grade 8 Honours Student at St. Andrews Regional High School.
