What to expect
UMC 2017 will maintain the shorter, more compact format successfully introduced in 2016. It will be structured around a model of core and adaptive leadership competencies and will consider the principles and processes that guide decision-making in key topic areas and explore these topics through a range of activities including presentations, case studies, simulations, and discussion groups.
Program Description
The University Management Course (UMC) will enhance your ability to carry out your responsibilities and manage your work environment more effectively and efficiently in continually changing, and frequently constrained, circumstances. Structured around a model of core and adaptive leadership competencies, UMC 2017 will consider the principles and processes that guide decision-making in key topic areas and explore these topics through a range of activities including presentations, case studies, simulations, and discussion groups.
In this weeklong residential program, you’ll examine legal issues and institutional policies, power and influence in your organization, restructuring issues, resource management, negotiation and conflict management, and the changing leadership role.
Who is the Program for?
UMC is appropriate for managers within the higher education system. Individuals working within both the academic and administrative areas are encouraged to apply: Department Heads, Associate Deans, Directors, Managers and Senior Executive Assistants.
Program Objectives
Structured around a model of leadership the program brings together a range of participants. The course highlights strategic planning and governance, preparing and aligning budgets with strategic directions, decision-making and team building, negotiation and conflict resolution, and organizational justice for students and employees.
Key Topic Areas
Significant change is a constant of the post-secondary environment. Social, economic, governmental policy and technological trends directly affect our institutions. The following topics will be explored through a range of real-world Canadian examples led by a team with extensive knowledge of and experience in university leadership and management: leadership concepts, styles, problem-solving and team building, budgeting and financial models, governance and strategic planning.
